Epson Stylus Photo R2000: a new superstar

All Epson professional photographic printers are a symbol of top quality device. All the reviewed representatives of Epson R series proved to be of high quality. Today we will test Epson Stylus Photo R2000 in order to reveal its merits and demerits.

Looking alike

At the beginning of June a new photo printer Epson Stylus Photo R2000 was introduced on public. As it has been predicted, Epson positions R2000 as a breakthrough in printing area. Official site views Epson R2000 as “The best choice for commercial photo printing up to A3 format”.

Despite the fact that official press release says nothing about resemblance of Epson R2000 to any other model of the series, it is obvious to everyone that the hero of our review is the successor of Epson Stylus Photo R1900: printer intended for a professional and true-color photo printing.

However, most innovations in brand-new Epson Stylus Photo R2000 were borrowed from R1900. Technology of gloss optimization and orange ink for natural skin-tone reproduction were present at Epson R1900.

Alternatives

Rivals of our hero may be divided into two camps: professional broadsheet printers of R series and large-format printers that pretend to be professional photo printing device. First type embraces Epson R1900, Epson R2800, Epson R2880 и Epson R3000 models, the second - T1100 и Epson 1410. It worth mentioning that all those models, except R3000, are inferior to R2000 because of lack of interfaces diversity: they have no Ethernet, nor Wi-Fi module.

The main rival to Epson R2000 is its predecessor – R1900. Differences are only in control panel and price. In general, they are almost the same.

Epson Stylus Photo R2880 should be mentioned as well. The main differences are interface amount and ink drop volume (3pl against 1.5pl of R2000). One more difference is that R2880 aims at black and white printing while R2000 aims at true-color printing. However, the division into black-and-white and color printing is very vague.

We should mention recently launched Epson Stylus Photo R3000 that is a large-format printer. It is black and white printing oriented therefore it comprises cartridges of black and grey colors. Beyond peradventure it is a good device, though it won’t be a rival to Epson Stylus Photo R2000 due to different orientation.

And after all Epson 1410 and Epson T1100 can be named as rivals only regarding their price, which is lower, as technical specifications are not of a professional photo printer. Still Epson 1410 balance of quality and price has turned it into customers favorite. However, Epson Stylus Office T1100 is not a handmade lawn-mower. The device is intended for drawing printing and its four cartridges are more than enough for that purpose.

Price of Epson Stylus Photo R2000 may be the only reason not to buy it, though as experience shows, the price will drop down after novelty has passed.

Practicality and convenience

Kinship with R1900 has visible influence on Epson Stylus Photo R2000 design. Shape of the device resembles its predecessor’s, though the device is slightly larger. Color scheme remained the same: the unit is dark with light-grey strip.

The main difference in design is a control panel disposition. It is situated on the frontal panel of the unit. 6 buttons are arranged on Epson Stylus Photo R2000 control panel: power button, Wi-Fi button, network status button, button for paper, ink and roll paper. Right near 4 indicator lights are situated: power, paper, ink change and network indicators.

The unit surface is matt which is really pleasant as it is easier to keep it clean. However, Epson specialists have designed trendy and practical design pattern according to which they manufactures R series devices for the last several years. This is the main reason for printers’ likeness.

One more pleasant thing is an interfaces diversity. Epson Stylus Photo R2000 has built-in USB Hi-Speed (USB 2.0) and Ethernet which sometimes is not only desirable but even required. Besides, Epson R2000 has wireless module as well as PictBridge that provide printing from your camera.

Epson R2000 trays are telescopic, paper feeding is standard. Top trays can hold 120 pages. Besides the printer has pass for media up to 15mm thick.

And about the package. In addition to the printer a customer gets a roll paper holder, a power cord, a CD tray, a manual, drivers CDs and a set of original cartridges plus two cartridges for gloss optimization. As usual, the set doesn’t comprise USB cable.

As most of professional series devices, Epson R2000 has practical design and gets “A” for it.

Inside the printer

Printing system of Epson Stylus Photo R2000 is similar to R1900 for it has Epson Micro Piezo print head with minimal ink drop of 1.5pl, Epson Ultra Chrome Hi-Gloss2 ink in combination with 8 cartridges. As for cartridges, Epson sticks to standard CMYK palette with additional red and orange cartridges for better natural skin tone rendering. There are 2 black cartridges: for glossy and matt media. Besides, printer chooses automatically which of them to use. And the eighth cartridge bears special gloss, the limpid polymer for photo printing quality improvement. During the printing process it strengthens connection between pigments and photo paper. In this way it forms perfectly smooth surface and provides ideal light reflection. The gloss is indispensible while rendering bright areas on photos the area requires minimum imager. That is why it solves the problem of color rendering.

All we can say about Epson professional photo printers’ printing quality is that it proved to be perfect that is why it sounds trustworthy that it is compared to lab quality.

As for printing speed, official press release only gives information of A3 printing format. It has been claimed to print A3 photo for 235 seconds that sounds verisimilar. It worth mentioning, that R1900 was claimed to print with 106s/m speed. However, you won’t find a word about text documents printing.

Another thing worth mentioning is efficiency of the printing. According to official press release information, using 8 independent cartridges of 17ml capacity helps to decrease ink consumption and increase productiveness. Apart from that, Epson Stylus Photo R2000 corresponds with Energy Star international power consumption standard.

Claimed characteristics are really impressive. And we may concede that all these will turn to be truth.

It is time to have a test

We decided to test photo printing as there is no logic in buying professional photo printer in order to produce text documents.

So we have started the test with the best printing settings and were deeply impressed by the result. A complicated combination of 8 cartridges proved to have excellent results. We were pleased with metamerism absence: there were no changes due to angle or illumination changes. Black and white printing has the same perfect quality.

Now let’s talk about printing speed, the main problem of Epson Company printing products. A3 format printing requires 230-240 seconds for delivering color or black and white photos. So Epson Stylus Photo R2000 met all our requirements. Epson Stylus Photo R2000 delivers not only prints of perfect quality but does it quickly.

Verdict

R2000 professional photographic printer produced by Epson was successful, as we expected. It continues the traditions of R series devices. It provides prints of excellent quality, and even has quick printing speed, that is not common for Epson printing products. In addition, it has a practical matte surface and several modern widgets as energy saving. Its price is overrated, but it is traditional for all the new products. However, we expect soon price drop.
