FAQ
1. What is a CISS (continuous ink supply system)?
CISS (continuous ink supply system) – is a device which is mounted into your printer, all-in-one or a plotter and consists of 3 parts: ink tank, multichannel silicon pipes and cartridges, identical to the original ones. The inks flow down the pipes from the tank right into the cartridges, and from there – to the print head. The system is extremely simple to use, because you can easily control the ink level through the transparent walls of the tanks, and, once filling the tanks, you forget about this procedure until you print about 2500 prints. All the elements of the system are reusable, so you buy the system once, and then pay only for the inks, thus each print will cost you 30 times less than if the original cartridges are used. Refilling the CISS, you don’t have to take out the cartridges, so the print head is safe from dust and sunlight, and will be in use much longer.

2. What is a RC (refillable cartridge)?
RC (refillable cartridge) – is a cartridge, almost identical to the original, but with one significant difference – it is reusable and can be refilled. They have chips that can be reset, so you can easily refill the cartridges and economize hundreds of pounds. For several model we supply RCs without chips that ensures the highest compatibility with the printing devices, yet doesn’t deprive them of their reusability. RCs do not have tanks with inks so they do not take up space near your printing device. They are a perfect decision for big printers and plotters due to the sizes of the cartridges or for those who don’t do much printing, but are not keen to waste their money.

3. What is a CISS-kit?
CISS-kit – is a CISS system that consists of plastic ink tanks and multichannel silicon pipes; however, in the CISS-kits the original cartridges are used. CISS-kits are assembled by the users themselves and are supplied for model ranges with complicated types of chips or with vast scope of different types of cartridges, usually for printers by HP and Canon. CISS-kits do not require the users to possess sophisticated technical skills, are reliable and always compatible with the printing devices because of the original cartridges used.

4. Do I need a CISS or a RC?
The easiest way to choose between the CISS and RCs is to assess the amount of printing and the volume of your cartridges. If you do not print a lot and do not require much inks, but still want to economize, RCs will be the perfect choice. But if you print every day, do a lot of colour printing, and the consumption of inks is very high, the CISS is the thing you need. If you have a big professional 8 colour printer or a plotter with cartridges, whose volume may reach up to 100 ml each, then RCs are the solution you are looking for, because their volume is equal to that of a CISS and there is no need to use the whole system. INKSYSTEM Company provides their customers with all the solutions most suitable for each model.

5. What printers are the best for a CISS?
We always recommend our clients to choose Epson printers to be used with CISS because printers by Epson trademark have proved to be the most reliable and long-lasting among the printing devices on the market. Epson printers work best with CISS, so glitches and malfunctions are the rare case. Epson uses piezoelectric method of printing and fixed head, unlike most other manufacturers, that is why their printers provide higher quality of printing, long lasting service and better compatibility with CISS and RC.

6. How to install a CISS?

10. How to reset CISS or RC?
We provide three types of CISS and RC so there are three ways of resetting the chips.
First, you can reset your chip simply pushing the button on the chip, situated on the black cartridge. Just one push will reset all the cartridges in the system. Second, chips can be reset if the cartridges are removed from their slots in the cartridge compartment, and afterwards are clicked in. This procedure nulls the settings and the chips thus are reset.
Third, the chips can be reset if you make the contact of two pins on the chip. To do this, remove the cartridges from the printer. On top of the chip there are two small golden pins. With the help of a flat screwdriver make the contact of these pins for 5 seconds, and this will reset the chip. Repeat the procedure for each cartridge, install them back into the slots until they click in, and you can print again.

11. How to choose CISS for my printer?
Your choice of the CISS for your printer should be based mainly on the model of your device. For finding the CISS which will work with your printer, find out the model, number and the number of the original cartridges that are used in your printing device. Some printers do not work with wholly alternative system, so we provide CISS-kits for them that allow our customers to economize in any case. For big printers and plotters the RCs are used mostly as the way to reduce the costs for printing.

12. How to use CISS correctly? (What do I need to know if I use CISS?)
Using CISS is a very easy process; however, the users should follow several simple rules so that not to face any issues at all.
First, mind that the system should be placed on the level of table the printer stands on or not higher than 3 inches (8 cm) above the level of the table. Consult the manual for your model in order to find out the exact height CISS should be placed at. If you exceed the height, the inks may leak from the pipes and spoil your prints and the print head.
Second, you should not leave the inks for a long period of time because they may dry out. In order to avoid this, print at least once a week using all the inks. So, if you plan to leave the printer for quite a period, we recommend you pour out the inks from the system into the bottles so that the print head and the pipes didn’t dry our and were not clogged.
If you are planning to transport the system, do not forget to change the dust filters for silicon plugs and try to transport the system with the outmost carefulness.

13. Do I lose in quality if I use CISS?
No, if you use CISS with high quality inks, the losses in quality are extremely insignificant, if any. They may reach 2-3% in the most, but even such image aberration cannot always be noticed. The photos, printed using our inks, possess excellent resolution and do not fade with time.

14. Do I lose a warranty for my printer if I use CISS?
If a CISS is installed carefully, especially, when it is done by our specialists, there is no damage done to your printing device. None of CISS elements seriously interferes with the printer’s construction or damages it, so you are not deprived of the warranty for your printing device. If your printer suddenly broke down and is still under warranty, you can easily uninstall your CISS and take your printer to the service centre and it will be fixed, since no interference is noticeable.

15. CISS problems: the printer doesn’t print, the ink doesn’t flow to the print head.
The printer may not print for three reasons: the tanks are closed with air plugs, the silicon pipes are squeezed or twisted or the cartridges contain the air inside. First, check the plugs on the tanks. Make sure, that the smaller holes closer to the centre of the tanks are closed with dust filters, not with the air plugs. If they are closed with the silicon plugs, used for transportation of the printer, remove the plugs. Afterwards make two head cleans and leave the printer for an hour. Make several nozzle checks to achieve the highest quality of printing. Second, check the silicon pipes. They should not be twisted or squeezed by the cover, the carriage should move freely; the pipes must not sag or be stretched too tightly.
Third, check whether the cartridges do not contain air inside and are full of inks. If there is air inside, you will need to pump the cartridge. Take the cartridges from the printer. Take a small screwdriver and carefully remove the round silicon plug from the top of the cartridge. Take a clean medical syringe without a needle and insert it into the hole. Draft the air out until the inks comes into the syringe. Pull out the syringe and wipe off the residual ink from the cartridge. Close the plug and repeat the procedure for each cartridge. Insert them into their slots until the cartridges click in. Make a couple of head cleans and leave the printer for 15 minutes. Make nozzle check to achieve high quality of printing.

16. CISS problems: there are stripes on my photoprints.
Stripes can be caused by two reasons: the cartridges ran out of ink or the print head is clogged.
If the cartridges ran out of ink, refill the cartridges and the system. If the cartridges still contain air, try pumping the cartridges. How to pump the cartridges is described in the paragraph ‘CISS problems: the printer doesn’t print, the ink doesn’t flow to the print head.
If the print head is clogged, make two head cleans in succession and leave the printer for an hour. If it didn’t work, remove the cartridges from the printer and clean each manually, using 2 ml of the cleaning liquid for each colour. Leave the printer for an hour, make a head clean and a nozzle check manipulations.

17. CISS problems: the print head dried out.

If the print head dried out, it will be necessary to wash it with the cleaning liquid. Remove the cartridges from the printer. Take the syringe with the long rubber gasket and extract the cleaning liquid from the bottle. Insert the syringe into the needle on the print head and release some liquid. Repeat the procedure for each colour. Insert the cartridges back until they click in. Make a head clean procedure and leave the printer for an hour.

18. CISS problems: colour bleeding, smudges or specks.
Colour bleeding, smudges, specks, or any other colour stains are usually caused by the system placed higher than 8 cm (3 inches) above the level of the table. Consult the manual about the exact height of the system for your model of printer.

19. Why use INKSYSTEM inks with your CISS?
We recommend our customers to use INKSYSTEM inks with our CISS because our inks were developed especially for high resolution and quality photoprinting and were tested thoroughly for several times. Thus, if using our inks with INKSYSTEM CISS, you get a 2-year warranty for all our products. Yet, we cannot provide our customers with warranty if they use third-part inks with our CISS, because we cannot assure their decent quality and be responsible for the consequences.

20. Can I use Canon inks with Epson printer or vice versa?
No, you cannot use inks, developed for one printer, with the printer that belongs to another trademark. This is connected with the fact that different printers use two different methods of printing: thermal and piezoelectric, so the inks for thermal printing cannot be used in a piezoelectric printer and vice versa. If you use wrong inks with your printer, this may lead to damages of a print head and worsening of the quality. INKSYSTEM inks are developed especially for each trademark, so this will assure the quality of your prints and safe functioning of all parts of your printing device.

21. Can I buy an already filled CISS?
Yes, you can order a CISS already filled with inks. You will need to pay only for system and inks, and will fill it for free for you.

22. There are printers with CISS on your website, can I buy a CISS without a printer?
Yes, you can always order a CISS if you already have a printer. Just make sure that you know the model of your printer and the numbers of the original cartridges before placing an order for a CISS so that you have chosen the system suitable for your device.

23. Is the cost of inks included into the cost of a CISS?
No, the inks are not included into the system and, therefore, the cost of inks is not included into the cost of a CISS. The inks are to be ordered separately, however, we provide our clients discounts for the second and next orders. We can fill the system per customer’s request absolutely for free.

24. What is the cheapest post service?
The cheapest post company in the United Kingdom is Collect+. However, we recommend our customers to use Royal Mail for small parcels and DPD services for big items such as printers or all-in-ones since their service is known to be more reliable, even though slightly expensive.
