Top model all-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD review: awesome possum

Expensive, over-functional, stylish, modern and impressive in every way – it's all about the best photographic all-in-one Epson, the dream of any self-respecting printing enthusiast or just a printing machine for those, who are eager to spend cash and become an owner of a newcomer on the device market. If status is your goal, then price means nothing. It is all about Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD.

First impression made by Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD

It is a new all-in-one king of home photo printing segment, the successor of last year throne keeper Epson Stylus Photo PX820FWD. Our hero is almost an exact copy of its predecessor, but with built-in mobile and internet Epson Connect technology. It equipped with brand iPrint (direct printing via Wi-Fi gadgets on basis of Android and IOS), Email Print (print e-mail, analog of HP ePrint), as well as Apple AirPrint (direct printing via Wi-Fi devices by Apple) and Google Cloud Print (remote printing service by Google).

Photo printer Epson Stylus Photo PX820FWD

Epson PX830FWD is a device with wide range of functions. It is the all-in-one with duplex printing, a CIS-scanner with automatic feeding of multipage documents, copier, fax machine, card reader, PictBridge, large touchscreen panel and set of wired and wireless interfaces. Hardly is there any person, who uses all these functions on a regular basis, but still, over functionality is one of the characteristic features of top devices.

What is a target audience of this device? Definitely, it is a bad choice for those, who are eager to save on printing or who are looking for a good quality printing for a reasonable price. It is not a good variant for work. All-in-one Epson PX830FWD is rather a trendy toy for prosperous enthusiasts or people concerned by status. The manufacturer can't help ignoring this segment on the market.

Price. Possible alternatives.

Price tag is not just and obvious hint but a kind of affirmation that the all-in-one is not a printing/scanning/copying device but a luxury. The very first rival of our hero is his predecessor all-in-one Epson Stylus PX820FWD. The latter lacks mobile and Internet connect technology, its appearance bears a little difference from PX830FWD (another highlighter of the touchscreen and absence of a decorative trays cover, card reader and PictBridge), but nevertheless, they are almost equal.

Epson Stylus Photo TX800FW lacks duplex printing, but its cost is higher than PX820FWD. All-in-ones Epson Stylus PX730WD and Epson Stylus Photo R2880 have automatic duplex printing, but lack fax and DCA, besides, scanner resolution is lower (2400х4800 dpi against 4800x4800 dpi of PX830FWD). It is necessary to mention that only PX730WD has Epson Connect technology.

Let us remind you about Epson Stylus Photo TX710W and Epson Stylus Photo R2000 which prices are overrated in comparison with PX720WD. Moreover, they lack duplex printing, mobile and Internet connect technology, equipped with out-of-date button control. Regardless of that they have slight difference with the series.

HP Company can't offer photo printing device as expensive as Epson PX830FWD. Their leader HP Photosmart C410 is almost two times cheaper than our hero. The main differences are number of cartridges (5 against 6), LCD screen (6.1cm against 8.9cm), control panel (button control against touchscreen) and compactness. And still it has some better technical details, for instance, 9600х2400 dpi scanner resolution against Epson's 5760х1440 dpi. Besides, minimal ink drop volume of HP Photosmart C410 is 1.3pl against 1.5pl of Epson PX830FWD.

So let us sum up. All-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD is quite good. Its only serious rival is PX820FWD that is less expensive, but lacks Epson Connect technology. PX and TX series looks like a reasonable purchase because of their price, but still have poor set of functions and scanner resolution. If we are talking about HP alternative, its Photosmart C410 is reasonable alternative but only for those, who regard price and status under cost-effectiveness.

All-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD

Design

Reviewed all-in-one is a large-scope device. It is cumbersome itself regardless of the detachable duplex. However, its built-in Wi-Fi-module solves the problem of the impressive size almost completely. But even in spite of the massiveness, our hero is a surprisingly elegant and stylish. Besides, it has slight differences in design with Epson Stylus PX820FWD and they are only beneficial.

The main innovation was to hide a system of horizontal trays (separating office and photo paper), a card reader (supports memory cards of various sizes up to CF) and PictBridge USB under a thin and rather flimsy-looking glossy cover. This makes the device more neat (but only when the lid is closed), but adds one more easy soiled surface. CDs tray is traditionally located above a large touch screen control panel. Control panel has a variable angle of inclination so the tray is available, if the screen is in upper position.

The diagonal of touch screen control panel is 19.8 cm, with an 8.9 cm color LCD display. It is the best way to enjoy control, independent of PC: standard printing mode directly from memory cards or your camera, scanning onto memory cards and a simple image editing. Former mentioned involves usage of one of the predefined filters for photo editing. On-screen menu is well-organized, so it is easy to get used to all-in-one or fax operation. Touch keys highlighting is green (at PX820FWD it is orange).

Scanner lid has some projection with an automatic document feeder. ADF itself has a lid, so if there is any need you can get to inner mechanism through it. However, its misoperation is a rare thing: we did our best to make the printer jam paper, but we failed. In order to access the printer carriage you need to lift the scanner module. It is interesting that the device uses fixed cartridges which are connected to the print head with special tubes. The decision to imitate the CISS is rather strange: such systems are usually used with high capacity cartridges so they don't interfere with carriage movement. On the contrary, all-in-one PX830FWD uses cartridges of standard capacity (meant for Epson Stylus Photo series).

On the back of the device a removable duplex and panel interfaces are placed: USB port, Ethernet, and two telephone lines. The set doesn't include USB-cable, so you will have to buy it independently.

Let us draw a conclusion. Epson PX830FWD is a top model all-in-one. It has glossy panels, which are not fingerprints or scratch resistant. So it looks stylish only before their appearance. Epson PX830FWD is rather cumbersome, but functionality compensates for it in full.Technical details of printer, scanner and fax.

Epson Photo PX830FWD is an expensive and technically advanced, but only at first sight. In fact, it appeared to be semiprofessional 6-color photo printer (similar to Epson T50/T59/P50, six-hundredth and seven-hundredth Stylus Photo TX and PX series).

Its printing system consists of Epson Micro Piezo print head and six individual cartridges with photographic Epson Claria ink. Maximum print resolution is 5760х1440 dpi, and minimum ink drop volume is 1.5 pl. Standard printing CMYK palette was complemented by two "light": light magenta and light cyan. The manufacturer claims that the additional colors guarantee stable color rendering and proprietary Claria ink guarantees brightness of images, printed with Photo PX830FWD, for 200 years (when stored in an album).

Still, Epson Company promises concerning printing quality are far from real. Epson claims Stylus PX830FWD to be as good as professional photo laboratory equipment. Essential question is why we should overpay for professional wide screen printers or buy 8 or 9-colors printing devices if there is Epson PX830FWD? It is simply not profitable for the manufacturer itself. Speed promises are also fabulous: Epson PX830FWD produces 40 text pages (doesn't matter monochrome or color) or 6 10х15cm photos.

Original cartridges are available in standard (M) and high (L) capacity, but the latter are available only in a set. M-tank capacity is 7.4ml and L-tank capacity – 11.1. The cartridges price makes it reasonable to look for RC and CIS system.

Our hero has a contact (CIS) scanner, with 4800х4800 dpi maximum optical resolution. If it really provides such amazing color rendering and sharpness, the scanner could become a professional photographer or a designer's tool. Epson PX830FWD is equipped with fax which provides 200x200 dpi resolution, can store up to 180 A4 pages and send them at a rate of 3 pages per second.

Sum up. All-in-one Epson PX830FWD is a top model device, but it won't be fair to call it a technical advanced device. Of course, it has highest possible resolution, but its CIS scanner could have been updated to CCD. Even Micro Piezo printing head is by no means a surprise for it has been used by Epson Stylus Photo T50 and Epson Stylus Photo P50 as well. It seems to everybody that Epson fails to go with the times.

Testing

To test the quality and speed of documents and photo printing, we used two traditional patterns: "Text" (a text document with the phrase "Center for alternative supplies" typed in different Times New Roman point types) and "Picture" (a set of color and black and white A4, 10x15 cm photographs). The driver provides five quality modes: "Draft", "Text", "Text and Image", "Photo", "Best Photo". The template "Text" was printed in each of the available modes, "Photo" - only in the last three.

All-in-one Epson PX830FWD provides high quality of photo printing in each of three modes with little difference in quality. All text documents, printed in different modes, are almost equal and are of high quality. The only exception is "Draft" mode printing with poor color richness and pulsing text rendering.

See table with printing speed

Printing modeA4 text page10x15 photoA4 photo
Draft4 sec--
Text9 sec--
Text and Image9 sec11 sec55 sec
Photo37 sec11 sec55 sec
Best photo37 sec44 sec2 min 5 sec

It is evident that claimed figures of documents print speed are greatly exaggerated: all-in-one PX830FWD is able to deliver up to 15 pages per minute (in a "Draft" mode). Nevertheless, the promised speed of photo printing is not far from truth: our hero is able to print almost 6 10x15 cm photos of good quality per minute. It is a great achievement of Epson professionals. Well done!

There are no scanning problems: images are crisp, clear and identical to original image.
Scanning speed of Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD

Optical resolutionScanning time
600 dpi28 sec
1200 dpi3 min
2400 dpi24 min 50 sec

As you can see, usage of high optical resolution settings leads to a significant increase in scanning time (so we decided not to scan with 4800х4800 dpi, the maximum available resolution). Let us draw a conclusion. PX830FWD is one of the best photographic all-in-ones by Epson. This device is characterized by excellent quality text and photo prints and rather high speed, but the latter is only concerning photo printing. Scanning quality and speed are also satisfying (if we are not talking about the best scanning resolution).

Advantages:

  • high quality of text and photo printing;
  • acceptable speed of text printing and excellent of photo printing;
  • multi functionality;
  • stylish design.
  • Disadvantages:

  • declared printing speed doesn't correspond to real one;
  • high price.
  • Conclusion

    We can keep on talking about Epson PX830FWD merits endlessly. It is really trendy, functional and productive device which will be good not only for home usage, but for professionals as well. Epson Stylus PX830FWD provides qualitative and quick printing, scanning plus additional functions. The only minus is its price. However, products of high quality always cost money.

    MFD is very cool and the price is acceptable. I ordered it with delivery. Everything was delivered in time, the servicers set it and explained how to use it.

    The device is absolutely of top class!

    I bought the Epson Stylus Photo PX830FWD with CISS from INKSYSTEM. Photo quality is not different from the pictures printed with the original cartridges, besides it gets cheaper in 20 times probably. And CISS may be easily refilled with inks, even inexperienced users may cope with it.
