Review of all-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD – a printing device not for everyone

“Faster, Higher, Stronger” – is an Olympic motto and it will be not for us not to adopt it to home printing segment. “Faster, Better, Easier” – so be it. But what can be more difficult than make improvements to a device that is almost perfect? What is meant is that most new devices have almost no difference in comparison with their predecessors for there is nothing important to be improved, so designers start to pay attention to the details. Besides, it is always catching, when a device has lots of details. So Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD is on the stage.

A new image for the old gadget

All-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD is a newly updated version of a wireless photo printer PX700W. For the last 3 years several innovations were introduced: a touch-sensitive control panel, double printing, updated Wi-Fi, new design and highlighting (green one instead of orange), support of smartphones and mobile tablet with iOS and Android platform and devices with Internet Connection technologies. Besides, Epson PX730WD printer has a Cloud printing which is viewed as ePrint analog.

But apart from being convenient, email printing has its own problems. Protecting system still is not perfect so the printer bans not only strange letters but also a great number of required correspondence.

Epson PX730WD is declared to be multifunctional device for enthusiasts, that delivers better-than-lab-quality results. Still, the all-in-one is far from dream come true: it is just a semiprofessional photo printer.

Pre-conclusion. Epson PX730WD aimed at enthusiasts but not home usage due to its over functionality. It is dubious that average non-professional user will be interested in via-Internet-printing as well as ink drop volume or configuration of printing nozzles or compliance with international standards of energy efficiency.

Possible “lookalikes”

If you are longing for money saving, Epson Stylus Photo PX720WD or TX700W will do. Both of them lack Cloud printing and mobile connect service, the latter doesn’t have double printing and touchscreen control panel.

However, there are always more expensive alternatives: Epson PX830FWD and TX800FW with scanner resolution of 4800х4800 dpi against 2400x4800 dpi, fax and ADF and lots of gizmos.

Epson PX730WD is technically advanced but unreasonably expensive home photo printer and you will have to overpay not only for functional diverse but for brand name and several innovations.

Design: glossy obsession

The first detail you will notice after having a look at Epson PX730WD is an abundance of glossy surfaces. The printer unit comprises output and feed trays, built-in cart reader (up to CF), PictBridge USB. Horizontal trays have complicated construction for separating office (120) and photo (20) paper. As a bonus printer comprise removable tray for CDs.

Photo printer PX730WD is not a compact device, though its weight of almost 10 kg indicates that it’s made of high quality materials. It is also worth mentioning that the device is perfectly assembled.

Scanner lid has hinges which extend only slightly to accommodate thicker magazines or books, but it doesn’t settle the matter. However, the scanner itself is attached to the printer unit professionally. Behind the unit there is a removable duplex, ventilation slits, USB and Ethernet connectors.

Epson PX730WD is a stylish and up-to-date gadget with impressive set of functions. Still it is viewed as unpractical due to printer block design. Glossy surfaces look stylish and elegant but it’s time-consuming to maintain it this way.

Technical specifications

Epson keep on using Micro Piezo printing head that provides 1.5 pl volume of ink drop and a set of 6-color cartridges with Claria ink. Epson PX730WD uses standard CMYK palette plus light cyan and magenta in order to improve quality of light areas of a picture while photo printing.

For better color rendering there are 180 nozzles for each color on the printing head so the maximum resolution is 5760х1440 dpi. This may provide better-than-lab-quality of printing. Great printing speed is also doubtful: Epson Company stated that PX730WD delivers 40 prints per minute (no matter monochrome or color) and 6 10x15 cm photos. Still, great scanning resolution is rather trustworthy. As usual, manufacturer keeps on feeding consumers with allegations of technical advancement of their new products, thought they are far from real. It is also interesting why a set of original cartridges cost makes up a quarter of the printer price.

Testing

As usual, we test the all-in-one Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD with four different printing templates: “Text” (multipage document with “Text” typed in Times New Roman 12 point type, single line spacing for monochrome office printing), “Text and Graphics” (with color diagram for color office printing test), "Center for alternative supplies" (typed in different Times New Roman point types, testing office printing), "Photo" (a set of color and black and white photographs to test quality and speed of printing).

Epson PX730WD delivers almost lab-quality photos, but office printing is not as good. There are a lot of cases of aliasing of symbols that may be a result of using photographic ink on ordinary office paper. Speed of printing is a bit impressive: it takes 47 sec to deliver 10x15cm photo and 111 sec for A4 photo format. Best quality mode increases this figures to 70 and 131 relatively. Office printing is slower than it was declared: 15 pages per minute for monochrome and 13 pages per minute for color prints. “Text” mode reduces the number of prints to 6 and 5 pages per minute relatively.

Scanning quality is perfect: scans are identical to originals, preserve brightness and sharpness. 2400х4800 dpi resolution is more than enough not only for home use but for professional as well.

Summary. Epson PX730WD copes with photo printing perfectly and quickly, but it faces difficulties with text printing: printing speed is good enough but defects as aliasing still take place.

Conclusion

Epson Stylus Photo PX730WD just spurs on to take up photo printing. Point is that the device is not good for text printing purposes, especially at home. However, the device is impressively multifunctional and embeds nearly all possible widgets except fax and ADF, though, it is dubious that all the functions will be in everyday use.

Advantages:

• great amount of functions and services;
• high quality of photo printing;
• high printing speed;
• stylish design.

Disadvantages:

• defects in text printing;
• real printing speed of documents is far from declared;
• abundance of glossy surfaces.
